Off-Site Safety Management

Certified by Royal Geographic Society with IBG

In response to a number of critical incidents involving young people and adults on field trips at home and abroad, the need for a specific safety management course was identified.

The Off-Site Safety Management (OSSM) course was the culmination of a process to provide training to organisers and leaders of off-site events.

Solutions to risk management

This is a suitable entry level risk management and travel awareness course for those responsible for the organising and running of off-site activities. It is a widely respected safety course with global appeal and knowledge that is transferable to many sectors.
It is also applicable to organisations looking to align themselves with the standard BS:8848 2014, the standard for safety in adventurous activities.

Who is it suitable for?

A wide variety of people will benefit from the course including: 

  • Youth group leaders, teachers and 3rd level staff involved in field trips.
  • Outdoor education and activity centre staff.
  • Expedition and adventure tourism operators.
  • Bushcraft & survival schools.
  • Wilderness and remote area safety professionals.

How is it delivered?

The course is designed to assist delegates to develop sufficient knowledge and understanding to manage groups going off-site safely. It is divided into three parts, 'Planning, Managing and Auditing'.

It is delivered via case studies, small group discussions and presentations. The content will be relevant to both an Irish and international legislative context.

Who delivers the course?

The course is delivered by a Fellow of the RGS & member of the IOSH for safety professionals. With relevant experience in adventure travel, expeditions and outdoor education spanning over 20 years. 

How long is the course?

The course is 15 hours in duration delivered over two days. Minimum numbers are required.

Private group bookings for societies and clubs available on request.

Certification and CPD?

All delegates receive a certificate of attendance from the Royal Geographic Society.

If you are member of the Mountain Training Association (MTA) this course qualifies for CPD credits.

This two day training costs €200 per person.

Course Content

Planning

Here we cover those aspects of planning which must be completed before a group departs. It includes assessing the needs of the group, group to leader ratios, completing a risk assessment and contingency planning.


Managing

The safe management of an activity is critical for dealing with real time events as they arise. We will learn about the appropriate actions and procedures when dealing with both a minor and major incidents.

Evaluating

"What gets measured gets improved" Peter Drucker.

This section addresses the essential review of the whole event that must be carried out to effectively improve future planning and practice.
