Combining the package of advanced wilderness first-aid and the RGS risk management course is the optimum package for wilderness and remote area support.
Included: all the teaching from the advanced course plus a two day risk management syllabus tailored for remote area travel.
The ability to treat injuries in the wilderness is paramount, but the foresight to adequately plan and risk manage any trip or expedition is where the smart money goes. Prevention of injury is the goal of anyone responsible for others in wild and remote environments.
What makes wilderness medicine stand apart from urban based courses?
Most civilian first aid courses are designed to provide people with the bare minimum skillset to assist an injured person in the urban / workplace setting until professional emergency medical services take over. This timeframe can range from, ideally minutes, to usually less than one hour before a first responder reaches a casualty.
In wilderness and remote areas it can be many hours or even days before organised rescue may arrive. In some environments, rescue may be delayed due to weather or remoteness. In these situations additional first aid skills and environmental awareness can be crucial to an injured party.
Before taking that epic trip or wild adventure make sure you are up to date with the latest evidence based wilderness medicine protocols.
All of our courses align to current evidence based wilderness medicine guidelines.
Learn basic life support skills. This course will pay particular attention to considerations for CPR in the wilderness, when to start/stop.
When travelling for adventure our biggest risks are usually from transport accidents and minor injuries.
Cold environments can claim even the healthiest lives.
Going on an expedition or long distance travel holiday can be exciting. But some basic preparation can reduce exposure to risk further down the line.
Exposure to cold environments can manifest injuries in many ways from non-freezing cold injury, to frostbite and hypothermia. Learn how to recognise, prevent and treat cold weather injuries.
Travel to altitudes above 2500m expose us to risk of acute mountain sickness. Ignorance of acclimatisation and the risks involved come with serious consequences. Using the latest evidence based guidelines learn about altitude illness.
The human body is intolerant of excessive heat. Just a few degrees rise in core body temperature can cause life threatening emergencies. We will explore the latest treatment methods and prevention strategies.
On average 115 drownings occur in Ireland each year. Males predominate in the statistics. Drowning is a preventable disease burden. Learn BLS skills and basic water safety principles when travelling to remote locations.
The management of trauma injuries in the wilderness can be crude but ultimately life saving. Learn how to treat the common injuries and what to pack in your first aid kit. When to stay and when to evacuate.
We are lucky to live in a country with professional rescue services. But not all countries have this luxury, particularly the more remote we travel. Time to rescue or evacuation to hospital can be prolonged the further you venture off the beaten path.
Learn the basic principles of prolonged field care.
