Wilderness First Aid and BLS certification

Wilderness vs Standard First aid

What's the difference?

Most civilian first aid courses are designed to provide people with the bare minimum skillset to assist an injured person in the urban / workplace  setting until professional emergency medical services take over. This timeframe can range from, ideally minutes, to usually less than one hour before a first responder reaches a casualty.

In wilderness and remote areas it can be many hours or even days before organised rescue may arrive. In some environments, rescue may be delayed due to weather or remoteness. In these situations additional first aid skills and environmental awareness can be crucial to an injured party.

Furthermore, it is widely believed that skill fade begins to occur roughly 90 days after learning. Before taking that epic trip or wild adventure make sure you are up to date with the latest evidence based wilderness medicine protocols.

Prolonged Field Care

We are lucky to live in a country with professional rescue services. But not all countries have this luxury, particularly the more remote we travel. Time to rescue or evacuation to hospital can be prolonged the further you venture off the beaten path.

Learn the basic principles of prolonged field care.

Climb if you will, but remember that courage and strength are nought without prudence, and that a momentary negligence may destroy the happiness of a lifetime. Do nothing in haste; look well to each step; and from the beginning think what may be the end.
